Literacy and Math Achievement Academies
Reading Academies
Senate Bill (SB) 925 establishes literacy achievement academies for teachers who provide reading instruction to students at the kindergarten or first, second, or third grade level. SB 972 establishes reading-to-learn academies for teachers who provide reading comprehension instruction to students at the fourth or fifth grade level.

Math Academies
SB 934 establishes mathematics achievement academies for teachers who provide mathematics instruction to students at the kindergarten or first, second, or third grade level.
2017 Applications for Trainers
Information for Applicants:
Applications for the Summer 2017 Literacy and Math Achievement Academies are open. If you are interested in being a math or Literacy Achievement Academy trainer please complete the following steps:

  1. Ensure that you meet the criteria listed below.
  2. Complete your application.
  3. Email your completed application to the appropriate ESC-20 contact listed below on or before January 13, 2017. Applications will be submitted to TEA as they are received.
  4. If your application is approved by TEA, you will be notified with information on how to register for the required TOT.

Please be aware that all approved trainers are required to attend one of the TEA Trainer of Trainer sessions listed for their academy.

Trainer Qualifications:

Math Achievement Academy:
All trainers must possess the following qualifications:
  1. At least five years of experience teaching mathematics in kindergarten-grade 12 (elementary experience is preferred, but not required)
  2. Educator certification in mathematics or core subjects (EC-6, 1-6, 1-8, 4-8) 
  3. Experience in delivery of mathematics professional development to teachers
  4. Strong knowledge of the mathematics TEKS, specifically in kindergarten-grade 5
  5. Experience helping teachers make connections between procedural fluency and conceptual understanding

Literacy Achievement Academy:

All trainers must possess the following qualifications:
  1. At least five years of experience teaching reading in kindergarten-grade 12 (elementary experience is preferred but not required)
  2. Educator certification in English Language Arts and Reading (grades 4-8 or 7-12), R eading Specialist, or Core Subjects (EC-6, 1-6, 1-8, 4-8) 
  3. Experience in delivery of reading professional development to teachers
  4. Strong knowledge of the English language arts and reading TEKS, specifically in kindergarten-grade 5
  5. Experience helping teachers make connections between procedural fluency and conceptual understanding

Academy Training Dates and Locations are as follows:
Reading - April 25-28 Grades 2 and 3, May 16-19 Grades 2-5, May 22-25 Grades 4 and 5, June 13-16 Grades 2-5. All will be in Austin (Doubletree at I 35 and 290) with continental breakfast and lunch provided.

Math – May 22-25 and June 5-8 at the Austin Marriott South.
