Low Incidence Disabilities (LID)

Low Incidence Disability (LID) classrooms, also sometimes referred to as Life Skills, Functional Learning Units, Adaptive Learning Environments (ALE), and other names, share a unified mission: to deliver safe, engaging, and effective educational and functional practices for students with significant cognitive disabilities or complex access needs.

A student who has been identified as having significant cognitive disabilities is a student who exhibits significant intellectual and adaptive behavior deficits in their ability to plan, comprehend, and reason. The student also can exhibit adaptive behavior deficits that limit their ability to apply social and practical skills across all life domains.  The student often requires extensive, direct, individualized instruction and needs substantial supports that are neither temporary nor specific to a particular content area.
